Philosophy of Oxygen VPSA Plant Technology

The grade of oxygen in air is about 21% and the nitrogen is about 78%. Their total grades are 99%, so if we want to get oxygen from air, we need to separate the oxygen from the nitrogen.

Both nitrogen and oxygen have quadrupole, but the quadrupole of nitrogen (0.31Å) is much bigger than that of oxygen (0.10 Å), so the adsorption capability of nitrogen in the zeolite is much stronger than that of oxygen (the force between nitrogen and surface ions of zeolite is strong). Therefore, when the air is under pressure and passes through the adsorbent bed equipped with zeolite adsorbents, nitrogen is adsorbed by zeolite; for less adsorption, oxygen is enriched in the oxygen phase and outflow the adsorption bed to separate oxygen from nitrogen. When the zeolite adsorption of nitrogen is close to saturation, it stops air flow and lower the pressure of adsorption bed. Adsorbed nitrogen of zeolite can be desorbed out and zeolite becomes renewable and reusable. More than two adsorption beds alternately switch to work to produce continuous oxygen.

The boiling points of argon and oxygen are so close that it is difficult to separate them; the two get enrichment in oxygen phase. So the devices of oxygen separation from air by pressure swing adsorption usually only get oxygen with purity of 90% to 95% (the maximum purity of oxygen is 95.6%, and the rest is argon); compared with the oxygen with the purity above 99.5% from cryogenic air separation device, it is also known as oxygen enrichment.
